How to get to Honningsvaag:Coastal liner from Tromsø, Kirkenes and Bergen. Plane from Hammerfest.

The new 8 km long tunnell from Honningsvaag (on the island) to the mainland has taken away some of the charm of this tour. But the cycling itself is good throughout this tour, although a bit one dimensional (too flat). This is not a hard tour. The landscape is very open and exposed. The views are sensational. Both Honningsvaag and Hammerfest is two very charming cities. Due to these reasons, this is a highly recommended tour. This tour can be very serious in bad weather or wind from south. There are only reliable shops at Honningsvaag, Skaidi, Kvalsund, Rypefjord and Hammerfest

Take a bus or taxi through the tunnell from Honningsvaag. The cycling on the mainland is very exposed over a small mountain just above sea level. The cycling and the landscape is very good. The road comes down to the Porsangen fjord at Repvaag. The road follows this fjord for the best part of sixty kilometers. The road is flat and the views are great. There is a 3 km long tunnell at the end of the fjord. At Olderfjord, the road takes off to the right (E 6) up over the mountain of Hatter. The climb is quite steep. At Skaidi (shops), take the road towards Hammerfest down to the sea again and out the fjord to Kvalsund. Cross the bridge to the island and follow the quite flat road to Hammerfest. The views are fantastic towards some islands. The first town is Rypefjord and the second town over the hill from Rypefjord is Hammerfest. Enjoy Hammerfest because it is a very special place on this planet.

Tour # 7.

How to get to Nordreisa:Bus from Tromsø and Alta. Plane from Tromsø.

This tour through Norway's finest mountains, the Lyngsalpene, is truly amazing. The scenery is brilliant. The two ferries make this an interesting tour, although a bit difficult. The ferries are frequent, but please check out the ferry tables. Most of this tour is flat with only one hill worth mentioning. There are only reliable shops at Nordreisa, Lyngseidet and Tromsø.

The road out of Nordreisa goes past the airport at Sørkjosen before it start to climb vertically up to the top of the 227 meter high hill. The view towards the Lyngsalpene is among the finest views in Norway. The descent down to Rotsundet is twisty. The road along Rotsundet is flat before it enters Lyngenfjorden at Djupvik. The views are truly brilliant. The road climbs over a hill before the first ferry of the day at Olderdalen. This is a 35 minutes ferry, which ends up in the small village of Lyngseidet. There is a small hill after Lyngseidet, which take you over to a small fjord. This fjord is surrounded by high mountains and you will feel very small in this fjord. The road is flat with a couple of small hills just before the second ferry at Svensby. This 30 minutes long ferry takes you over to Breivikseidet. The road up the valley from Breivikseidet is a bit hilly, twisty and technical. The road ends up at Fagernes where you take the road along the fjord and over a hill to Tromsø. The descent to Tromsø and it's famous bridge is very scenic. Remember to keep an eye on the road ! Tromsø itself is a brilliant city and worthy a long visit. The cycling on the islands outside Tromsø is said to be superb.

Tour # 8.
Tromsø - Nordkjosbotn.
75 km.
Approx. total hill climb: 300 meters.
Highest point: 5 km after Tromsø 200 meters above sea level.
Traffic: Moderate.

How to get to Tromsø:Coastal liner from Trondheim and Bergen. Plane from Oslo.

This is the road out of Tromsø towards south. This tour is nothing special. It has some very good scenery, which is normal for the north of Norway. The road is mostly dead flat. Balsfjorden is very beautiful and that is all I can say. I used this tour as my relaxation day in my tour to the south of Norway. There are only reliable shops at Tromsø and Nordkjosbotn.

The road goes over the superb Tromsdalen bridge and over a small hill from Tromsdalen to Fagernes. The views are superb throughout this climb. The road then goes into a valley which has a small climb in the beginning. The road then goes total flat before it goes down to Balsfjorden. Follow this fjord with its mostly flat road to Nordkjosbotn.

Tour # 22.
Bardufoss - Finnsnes - Torsken (Senja).
115 km.
Approx. total hill climb: 600 meters.
Highest point: Svandalen 200 meters above sea level.
Traffic: Minimal.
Severity Rating: ***
Fun Rating: ******

How to get to Bardufoss: Plane from Oslo. Bus from Narvik and Tromsø.

This tour crosses the island of Senja + some very good cycling on the mainland too. The first, dead flat part of the tour goes through a flat landscape. The last, very hilly part of the tour goes through a very dramatic and mountainous landscape. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. This tour is one of the best tours I have ever had in Norway. Shops at Bardufoss, Andselv, Finnsnes, Hamn, Gryllefjord and Torsken.

Take the busy E6 down the river to Buktamo. Do not cross the bridge ! Take RV 855 towards Finnsnes. The road is dead flat for twenty-five kilometers along a large river, along a lake and then along a fjord to Finnsnes. Stock up with food and drink at this town. Take the bridge between Finnsnes and Senja. Follow RV 86 along the fjord for a while before the road start to gently climb up a valley (Svandalen) towards a mountain. The mountain is reached just before the other side of this island. The road falls down to a small fjord and then reaches the Atlantic Ocean at a bridge at Straumsnes. The landscape is rugged and wild. The next spetacular fifteen kilometers of flat road is very exposed towards wind. Visit Hamn and the small shop. At Ballesvika, the road climbs vertically up to a 170 meters above sea level mountain. The view to the next fjord will take your breath away. It is out of this world and worthy the tour. The descent to the small fjord is quite exposed and vertical. At the Gryllefjord - Torsken crossroad, take the road down to the scenic village of Gryllefjord. You then have to double back one kilometer again to get back to the crossroad over to Torsken. Another steep 170 meters above sea level mountain takes you over to Torsken and the end of the tour. Buy a house, marry one of the many young girls/men here and live here 'till you die.

Tour # 23.
Bardufoss - Sørreisa - Sjøvegan - Bardufoss .
155 km.
Approx. total hill climb: 400 meters.
Highest point: Tangen 165 meters above sea level.
Traffic: Minimal.
Severity Rating: ***
Fun Rating: ****

How to get to Bardufoss: Plane from Oslo. Bus from Narvik and Tromsø.

This is a tour I did when I spent one year in the Norwegian army. This is quite a good tour which can be combined with the Senja tour # 42. The scenery is not in particular spetacular, but the cycling is good with some small hills. It is a good training route and a variation of the Tromsø - Narvik tour. Shops at Bardufoss, Sørreisa, Sjøvegan, Setermoen.

Take the road up to Andsvannet and flat through a small forrest. The road falls down to Sørreisa at the fjord. Take RV 84 along the fjord over a small hill to Fossmo. The view towards Senja along this fjord is very good. The road climbs gently up Skøelvdalen to Tangen and a small lake. The road falls down from the lake to another valley. Take the road to the left at this crossroad over the hill and down to Sjøvegan. The view towards some peaks hanging over this fjord is very good. The road (RV 851) from Sjøvegan to Setermoen is mostly flat along two lakes and a river, with only a hilly bit before the top. The last bit on E 6 is vertical though. The descent to Setermoen is not bad. At Setermoen, you are down in a valley again which you follow back to Bardufoss.
